The Town is beginning the search for a new police chief upon Chief Jones’ retirement this spring. Timnath community members are invited to meet with the Town’s recruiter on January 14 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Timnath Community Room.

During the open house, community members are encouraged to share what they are looking for in this crucial role. The recruiter will use this feedback to develop an overview of what the Town is seeking in potential police chief candidates.

Those unable to attend the in-person open house may submit their feedback on YourTimnath.org by January 17.

Utilizing feedback from the community, the active recruitment process is set to launch in February, with the goal of having a new chief in place by May.

The Chief of Police should be someone who applies a proactive approach to his/her/their job, creating and supporting a safe community, rather than reacting to specific crimes. That individual should be committed to working alongside city and county government, as well as private companies in Timnath, to create an atmosphere wherein a seamless integration of values is present that allows every citizen to have a voice and stake in the city.
The Chief does not necessarily need experience in northern Colorado, but must have experience in a community without much diversity, and have the knowledge and skillset to ensure the minoritized citizens feel as equally valued and safe in their community and homes.
The Chief must absolutely live in Timnath. No exceptions. If that person is hired from another area, they must move to Timnath. The Chief's responsibilities include a presence outside their on-the-job duties, ensuring that our citizens know and recognize the Chief and feel comfortable interacting with them. We need to see the Chief in town and know that his/her/their stake in the city is equal to our own.
Safety means different things to different people, and the Chief must be prepared to include everyone's definitions to create a safe community for everyone.
The Chief must also understand the value of interaction with citizens, regardless of format. To that end, he/she/they must have a knowledge of social media and its importance and be prepared to use these tools to foster community values.
The candidates for Chief should represent diversity in age, sex, gender, race, etc. Variations in voices will offer new perspectives that are important for Timnath to grow and become a home for all.
The Chief should also remain apolitical. An environment where bias and partisan actions are allowed means that those with differing opinions might feel less heard, seen, or even safe. The force as a whole is not and should never be politicized.
Transparency is of the utmost importance. I want to know who the candidates are while they are being considered. Names and pictures are minimum requirements (we can figure the rest out with Google). This transparency should extend to their job, and to those they manage. Rules for contact with the public, including those who may have committed a crime, should be clear and readily available, and this should extend to the actions of officers as well. A lack of transparency has caused a spotlight to be cast on many police actions, so if there is to be a problem, our Chief needs to be forthcoming with information BEFORE they are asked, treating the public like a partner.

Timnath Police Chief Input
1. The candidate for chief should have excellent communication skills and should understand the importance of frequent, open, and honest communication within the dept. and with the citizens of Timnath, the PD's community partners as well as partner agencies in Northern Colorado.
2. The candidate must understand the impacts of both positive and negative that social media can have on the ability of the department to caryy out its duties successfully. He/she must understand how to capitalize on the benefits of and neutralize the potential negatives created by misiniformation ppublished on social media.
3. The candidate for chief must have a significant level of experience hopefully in the NOCO area.
The ideal candidate would have high quality established relationships with most of the partner agencies in Northern Colorado, e.g. LCSO, FCPD, Timnath, FC, Windsor, Loveland, and Greeley fire, Colorado State Police, and with the critical health providers in the area. He/she must understand the importance of continual communication and collaberation with these organizations to provide the optimal public safety response capabilities for the Timnath community.
4. The candidate should embrace, instill, and reiforce the principles of Commnity Policing whereby law enforcement cooperates with community groups and citizens in providing optimal safety and security to the citizens of Timnath.
5. The candidate should be committed to the principle of meritocracy in their approach to hiring new and promoting existing departmental employees.
6. The candidate should be committed to the principle of continuous improvement. He/she should instill and maintain a culture that supports the notion that every team member can do better every day regardless of how insignificant the improvement may seem. In addition the candidate must be committed to a training regimen that ensures the Timnath PD is the best it can be. He/she should require the team to take advantage of the many training opportunites availiable with other LE agencies in Northern Colorado as well as internal departmental training initiatives.
7. The candidate for chief should understand that they have two paramount resposibilites: keep the citizens of Timnath and its visitors safe by enforcing the law and to keep the Timnath PD's officers and employees safe and healthy. He/she should resist being distracted by any other inessential initiatives whether they be introduced inside or outside the department.
8. The candidate must be acutely aware that special events require special attention. He/she must be willing to devote the necessary resources both internal and with the help of partner agencies to ensure these events are conducted safely.
In addition I support the suggestions recently submitted on this site by Anders W. Thank you for the opportunity to provide input on this very important position.

Culture Champion: Someone who understands how to steward a safe and healthy culture for their police force, focused on community values, while balancing a proven ability to hold his team accountable in a transparent fashion.

Community Advocate: Someone who engages in local community events, school athletics, festivals, activities, etc. Someone who is present with the community they support.

Field Presence: Someone who performs regular ride-alongs with their workforce, who is out in the field routinely so they have a strong sense of the day-to-day life of their police officers AND the community interactions.

Politically Neutral: An ability to have a voice on important issues that tie back to City/Community values but remain quiet on political issues for either party. The perfect candidate would be someone you couldn't tell if they were a democrat or republican, but you understood their values and how they upheld the City's values.
